Family Ministries

Holy Cross Family Ministry in East Africa draws its inspiration from seeking to reach out to families besieged with a multitude of challenges. This ministry brings God's love and presence more within reach for families as they grapple with day-to-day challenges.

Objectives of Family Ministry

In the spirit of Fr. Patrick Peyton, CSC, and under the sponsorship of the Congregation of Holy Cross, Holy Cross Family Ministry serves Jesus Christ and His church throughout East Africa by promoting and supporting the spiritual well-being of the family. Faithful to Mary, Mother of God, HCFM encourages family prayer, especially the Rosary. It directs its efforts to the evangelization of culture using mass media to entertain, inspire, and educate families. It strives to bring to reality its mottos: "The Family that Prays together Stays together" and "A World at Prayer is a World at Peace."

Activities

HCFM runs weekly and daily radio programs (Voice of Toro, Radio Sapientia - Kampala, Radio Empanga - Busoga all in Uganda, and Radio Wawumini in Nairobi, Kenya) on recitation of the Rosary, reflections, and meditations on the mysteries of the rosary as related to conventional challenges in family life. Teams visit Catholic Parishes to conduct seminars and retreats that center on the power of Prayer, show church related movies to groups, couples, and schools, and has distributed hundreds of rosaries through its activities and programs. It also trains individuals and married couples to serve as counselors and facilitators on the local level, helping their neighbors to face challenges with great faith in God. Training is offered in skills of communication, reconciliation, prayer, sexuality and its challenges in married life, domestic violence, and the place of Mary in our suffering. It offers professional counseling to individuals, couples, and groups from our office in Kampala.

Each year, HCFM runs a contest in High Schools called "Try Prayer, It Works Contest" geared at inviting young people to participate in promoting the mysteries of the Rosary, using their inspiration in art and poetry.

HCFM is active in the Diocese of Jinja, Fort Portal, and Kampala Archdiocese, Uganda; the Archdiocese of Nairobi, Kenya; the Diocese of Mbulu, Tanzania.
