Leadership & Structure

Every human organization needs some sort of structure so that the founding charism and mission can be sustained over time. In the Congregation of Holy Cross, we organize our life and ministries at several levels: the local level, the regional level, and at the general or international level.

Our Constitution 7 speaks of Authority. It notes that “there can be no community among us unless our common life and mission are governed by deliberations and decisions that draw all of us towards unity of thought, sentiment and action” (C7, 80).

“Authority is a ministry among us and to us and is vested in our superiors, who act in conformity with our Constitutions and Statutes” (C7, 82). Superiors and their councils govern at the local level (in our religious houses and residences), at the regional level (in provinces, vicariates, and districts), and at the general/international level (superior general).

The organizational framework of Congregation of Holy Cross is structured as follows:

  • The Generalate (Superior General and Council, General Administration)
  • Vicariates (Vicariate Superior and Council) dependent on the Generalate
  • The Provinces (Provincial Superior and Council, Provincial Administration)
  • Districts (District Superior and Council) dependent on a Province
  • The Local Religious Communities, Residences, and Apostolic Works under the jurisdiction of the Provinces, Vicariates, or Districts.

Our Constitutions, revised in 1986 amid reflection on Holy Cross tradition and Blessed Basil Moreau’s message, provide focus, guidance, and inspiration that transcend and unite the leadership structure based on geographical location. We look to them for insights into the Congregation:
